3 main types of anesthesia are commonly used in oral surgery
In oral surgery, three primary types of anesthesia are commonly employed: local anesthesia, nitrous oxide, and intravenous anesthesia.
Local anesthetic
Local anesthetic is a specialized medication that is injected directly into the area that is being treated. Throughout the procedure, you will be fully conscious, and you may feel only a sensation of pressure from the dental instruments being used.
Nitrous oxide
Nitrous oxide, commonly known as “laughing gas,” is a type of sedation used in oral surgery. It is a colorless and odorless gas that is inhaled through a mask placed over the nose. Nitrous oxide is combined with oxygen and is administered to reduce anxiety during a procedure, while remaining conscious.
Intravenous anesthesia or “IV sedation”
This type of anesthesia is delivered through an intravenous (IV) catheter. This level of sedation can range from light, moderate, deep, or general anesthesia. It is commonly utilized for more complex and intensive oral surgeries, including the removal of wisdom teeth, dental implant placement, and larger-scale oral surgery procedures.
To ensure a surgery that is both safe and successful, it is essential to seek the expertise of a trained and certified oral surgeon.
